Elijah in the Whirlwind

Elijah in the Whirlwind

In our last story, Ahaziah asked Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, if he would be healed. The prophet Elijah intercepted the messengers and said that Ahaziah would die, and the Lord was not pleased. Ahaziah tried to send men to get Elijah, but fire consumed them. Ahaziah died as the Lord said, and his kingdom was given to Joram. In this story, Elijah will be taken to heaven, and Elisha will become the prophet, inspired by 2 Kings.

2 Kings 2:9
"Elisha bids farewell to his dear friend Elijah, and as they journey together for Elijah's final farewell tour, Elisha mirrors the feelings of anyone who has had to say goodbye to a cherished friend. Elijah's departure is anticipated, yet Elisha desires a little more time together. Their journey includes symbolic stops at Gilgal, Jericho, and the Jordan River. A unique request surfaces as Elisha seeks a double portion of the Spirit that empowers Elijah to perform miracles. Elijah is taken to Heaven in a fiery chariot in a spectacular departure, leaving Elisha to carry on his legacy. The parallel with Jesus' departure and the promise of the Holy Spirit to His disciples is evident. Although Jesus' earthly departure saddened His disciples, He assured them that the Holy Spirit would empower them to do even greater things.
